Day Trip to Elk River aka Day of Randomness

To back up even further and provide some context: Tony was home this weekend! Let me say this again, there were no hockey games requiring my husband to be away from family. Not Friday nor Saturday. It's funny how wedding photographers only get the "off" months with some normalcy and yet in our family, considering that the "off" season coincides with Tony's hockey reffing season, we get more like 2 months. Starting, almost now.

So, Friday night we started off with a bang and went to eat with my Mom and Stepdad to Cosetta's in St. Paul. Cosetta's is basically a Minnesota institution and my family grew up going there as a special treat. I've liked their fanpage on facebook and have been grateful for their infrequent posting. Unfortunately, or fortunately, this was not the case on Friday. They posted not once, but twice and by the time I saw the second posting the idea was already firmly taking root in my mind.

Oh my goodness, it was so good! Isaac definitely enjoyed the variety of food [mostacolli yum!], but not necessarily how dirty he got. He loves to get clean.

Probably the worst picture of my parents, ever.
[And yes we did have enough food to feed a small army :)]

One from the point and shoot, because dang. I have a nice looking husband.

After eating at Cosetta's we swung by my in-laws to watch some of the Gopher hockey game. Since giving up cable, the only struggle to remedy has been sporting events. If we could work out a package that only gave us FSN, we would be set.

Saturday morning at 11:15, Bethany and I had arranged a 2 year session with sweet Olivia at Sweet P's Ice Cream Shop in Elk River. Tony and I had no plans for the rest of the day, so I got him to agree to pack up Isaac and accompany me. Normally when I go to a session, it's just "Hey, I'm going here. I'll be back in 2 hours," but I just had a feeling we could make something really fun out of the day.

And we did.

After my fun session with Bethany and Olivia, Tony came back and we decided to grab lunch at Daddy-O's cafe.

A throwback diner, Isaac had both Tony and I in fits of laughter as he caught sight of Elvis and excitedly started to say "Jesus! Jesus!"
[Yes buddy, to some he is the equivalent of Jesus]

Isaac loves to color, primarily with paper and pen, and insistently demands that we right his name on his paper.

Hard at work, scribbling away.

I have a feeling I'll be seeing this face for a few more years . . .

After enjoying our burgers and fries, we headed back to Sweet P's for an ice cream cone. Isaac has the cutest way of saying ice cream, it comes out "Hakeem." Tony was, sorry, like a little kid in a candy store excited to learn that they had Rocky Road.

Love this series.

[Good stuff!]

While I ended up with plain old Vanilla Bean.
[Such a cheeseball!]

Isaac doesn't mind sharing ice cream, so long as he gets it!

One of my favorite pictures of the day. I had just bopped Isaac on the nose with my cone. In my family, you always ended up with ice cream or whipped cream on your nose, just to prove that you liked it.

Did you forget about my handsome hubby, because when he wasn't snapping photos, he was busy doing this:
[Lucky gal, I know :)]

One last one of me and my boy.
[I think we can work on the smile]

Isaac wasn't nearly as nice with the candy as Olivia was, so his time to explore the shop was much more limited.

And just to commemorate our day trip to Elk River . . .

After Sweet P's we ran to Target and then made a quick run over to Cabela's. I have to say, we were absolutely discriminated against because of our non-Carhartt or camouflage outerwear. The greeters absolutely ignored us, but were continually chirping away to everyone else. It was kind of funny and kind of peeved me that we were dismissed based on our looks, even though both Tony and I knew our way through most every department.

We of course completely proved their assumptions right that we wouldn't be buying anything though, since we were only there to see the animals.

I had to laugh that we basically were too cheap to go to a real zoo and instead were showing Isaac mounted game, but figured there are worse things in life. Plus, he loved it.

While there's no picture to accompany the line, just as we were walking out of Cabela's there was a 4 wheeler. Isaac loves any motorized vehicle, so we plopped him on the top, as he sat there wide eyed. To ease the transition of anything we asked Isaac to say "goodbye" to almost everything and the "tractor" as he called the 4 wheeler was not excluded. What we didn't anticipate however was getting him in the car and to hear him say "Love you, tractor!" Again, combined with calling Elvis Jesus, we came unglued.

After Cabela's we swung by the Albertville Outlet Mall and for a few shops, I actually contemplated purchases while deciphering projected sizes for not one, but two boys. It was a very pivotal moment for me. In October I'm going to have a 3 month old and a 2 1/2 year old. Crazy.

We didn't spend much time at the mall at all before making plans to watch the Gopher game with my brother, Scott and Maggie. Scott and Maggie are getting married on June 4th, so the majority of their wedding presents are being housed at Scott's, including their board games! Maggie sure knows the way to a boy's heart and brought out Jenga! Isaac impressed us all with how nicely he was adding and removing pieces, until of course one wild moment in which he decided the whole thing had to come down.

What he did next really surprised us though. He stacked one block on top of the other.

And then another.

And then another.
[No it doesn't make him a genius, but still pretty sweet!]

It was a phenomenal day.

What a fantastic family day!! That part of Elk River is great... It has such an 'old time' feel. Rob is obsessed with Daddy O's giant tacos and Henry loves the decor! So much to look at :)

Those ice cream shots are too cute! It's funny you say that about the Cabelas greeters because that's happened to my boyfriend and I before too! So dumb.

Looks like a great day and such great pictures!

As an aside, we don't have a zoo or a Cabela's nearby, so we take Lizzy to her aunt and uncle's house to look at all their mounted's kind of cool because Lizzy's uncle and his dad used to go to Africa to hunt, so there are all kinds of different animals, and Lizzy loves em all.
