Giving up for gain.

Wednesday, November 3, 2010

About three weeks ago I decided to do something practically stupid, I gave up coffee and pop on the weekdays.

I know, I can hear some of you audibly gasping.

It wasn't even like I wanted to necessarily do it. I mean I like coffee. I like grabbing a pop from my Mom's when I pick Isaac up at the end of the day. Why in the world would I give up something I like?

Because my life absolutely lacks discipline.

Remember when I started Insanity? Don't ask me about week three, because I didn't get there, let alone to the end of 3 months.

Remember when I used to run in the mornings? That was replaced by rising early to edit photos and then even that stopped happening when I was caught up.

Remember when I played soccer frequently? That ended with my summer pregnancy and I found myself looking for a team.

I do best when my life is regimented, when expectations are clearly defined and to be frank this elimination is just a small step towards regaining self-control.

It's had a terrible side effect though, I'm thoroughly irritated at most everything. Make that everything. Eh, it will all equal out, right? Even if I don't indulge in my favorite winter treat: Coffeemate's Peppermint Mocha creamer.

yup you are a crazy woman, but I hear ya on lacking discipline. I find I start so many projects and never finish. Maybe we all try to tackle too much at once and need to realize we can't do it all :)

I blogged recently about putting stuff off indefinitely. Make sure you get you time to figure out the rest of your priorities :)

Is it because of the caffeine? Why not switch to decaf? Life it too short and that feeling was affirmed when I went to the funeral of a 38 year old woman on Monday (daughter of a friend). You have to do what makes you HAPPY. That's what life is all about. We're all only here for a short time so make the best of it! That includes having your Peppermint Mocha creamer (that's one of my favorites, too). :)

I totally get it--this is the same reason that I make the decision to give something up for Lent each year. Not because it's "required" Biblically (I don't believe that it is), but because sometimes I feel like it's important for me to make intentional sacrifices in my life as a way to give myself discipline!

I'm really encouraged by this post! I recently heard a phrase (I'm shooting from the hip here) along the lines of "Learn to discipline yourself or else someone else will have to discipline you". Of course, the exact wording I heard was much more catchy, but hopefully you get the point :) Way to go!

Dude, good luck with that. I gave up caffeine for a month last year and had a migraine that lasted the entire time. Ouchie.

Pop!! Ahhhh! I haven't heard/read it called that since I moved from Michigan to Texas to get mawwied. Well call all things pop "coke" here in the south.

& good luck! I am diet coke's bitch. I cannot lie.

I gave up Mountain Dew last week (I was majorly addicted). The withdrawal sucked, but I swear I have more energy now without caffeine in my system. Good luck sticking with it! :)
