Back to Being a Teenager

I've never been one to have beautiful skin. I've heard it once or twice in my life and have immediately laughed, because I knew one or two things were true when said:
a) It was a beauty professional in a service situation.
b) They didn't know what else to say, so they said what came easily to them.
and the general consensus,
c) It absolutely was not true.

Don't get me wrong, there have been periods of my life in which I thought I had fair skin, where my acne was under control and seemed to respond to medication. But I have never been one to skip easily out of the house without a nary thought to the condition of my skin. It's been a battle.

In high school there were various prescribed medications and a few dabbles with proactiv, but nothing necessarily with lasting results. When I suspect the hormones started to shake out at the beginning of college, I found that 10% benzoyal peroxide was my best bet. I ended the experiments with gentle cleansers, scrubs and burning masks and stuck to what seemed to reasonably work: Oxy.

For the past at least 5 years it has been my best friend, even as the price tag kept rising. About two months ago I began to get really frustrated with Target as they seemed to be continually out of the face wash and topical cream. So I turned to Walgreen's and they too did not carry my beloved product.

Finally, in it's place the shelves were stocked with a new product.

And now I'm screwed. Against my better judgment, I bought it. Even though the last few years the retail/drug store variety acne solutions have hailed salcylic acid as a miracle product and have almost wholesale changed every offering from benzoyal peroxide, it does not change that it fails to effect my face, at all.

I'm back at square one folks, three weeks later. I have the proof that this "clinical treatment" sucks.

I have to use the 10% benzoyl peroxide too.. I have found a bunch of OTC washes that are solely the bp.. salcylic acid doesnt do it for me. I think Clean & Clear has a wash (purple bottle) and I know Neutrogena at least used to have a wash too.

There is a new 5% on the market and it did nada for me.. don't even bother trying that.

This is my first time commenting on your blog, but I wanted to suggest Neutrogena skinID. My order is on its way to me, so I can't confirm that it works, but you take a 20-question "quiz" and it gives you a combination of products to make a three-step treatment best suited for your skin. I only suggest this because I need BP too, and the cleanser they suggested for me has BP in it. You might look into it. I just had a baby, and my skin is looking worse than ever, so I completely relate to not leaving the house without some makeup.

I found the best thing EVER for zits a few years ago. It's called Persa-Gel from Clean and Clear. It's active ingredient is also benzoyl peroxide. Love it! I've suggested this to friends and they were instantly converted as well. You can find it at any drug store.

I actually break out more if I use anything with salicylic acid so I stick to Proactiv but there is an OTC product called Panoxyl that my friend swears by and it is 10% benzoyl peroxide.

I really should use some stronger stuff on my skin because it always looks horrible, but I hate how it ruins my towels with the bleaching element (peroxide, I guess) - has that happened to you? I've pretty much given up hope on ever having good skin!

I use the Neutrogena BP - 10%, works great!

Try *sometimes* I have found CVS pharmacy to carry products that I have not been able to find at target or walmart.

Ugh. I HATE when I find a product that works and then it's discontinued. I think your best bet would be Amazon - you're sure to find a benzoyal peroxide product on there!

Oh, no. I, too, have always had a continuous battle with my skin, and have tried it all (or so it seems). I wish I had a great tip for you, or a great suggestion, but alas, I've never found anything that worked!

However...did you ever try out the Zeno? It's the little spot thing that you hold on a zit, and it shrinks it. I sell Avon, and Avon has them, so I decided to get one at a discounted price. For those big zits that are just annoying and painful, it's nice, and does really shrink them within 24 hours.

But that's a "quick fix". I can't really suggest any magical washes or anything, because I have yet to find them myself. :(

I have always had trouble with my skin. All through my teenage years until 24 I used a combination of Clean and Clear and Neutragena. My skin never got any better or any worse. Two months ago I said, "screw it" and stopped using anything but water. My skin has actually cleared up (again, not perfect, but much better) since stopping using anything. I do live now in a really dry climate, so maybe that has something to do with it, who knows.

I went to the dermatologist just today! I thought that by 25 I would not be fighting a battle with acne anymore. The Persa-gel mentioned earlier is 10% benzoyl peroxide and about the only thing that *sometimes* works for me :-/
BUT then today the derm tells me that you shouldn't use benzoyl peroxide products while trying to get pregnant. Great. He gave me some other kind of acid stuff (not saliycic, I'd have to look at it to see what's called) so we'll see how that goes...

Proactiv works pretty slick :) Pricey, but worth the extra change.

I have been using it for almost three years now and my skin seems to be getting more neutral towards it. As in RETALIATION! But, at the end of the day, I realize that my hormones are way wacky and I can't blame Proactiv.

Try Paula's choice - it has the best of all the lines listed above - none of the hype, expensive packaging, unnecessary fragrance or filler ingredients. Developed by a woman who tests cosmetics etc for a living. I swear by both the AHA and the BHA - defiitely works if you work at it.

Changed my skin forever. not terribly pricey for what you get, it was recommended to me by another blogger and now i'd never go back.
